The area of Portbello
and Colon is historic Pirate area where
the likes of Sir Francis Drake and Captain
Henry Morgan set foot, as well as Christopher
Columbus and many other famous people
in history. The area of Portobello and
Colon are only 1-2 hours from Panama
City and Portobello is giving birth
to some new and exciting Marina projects,
the area is a sailors dream!!
If you take a trip
to Portobello and surrounding areas
you will see ancient forts and castles
that have either been destroyed or left
in ruins. The forts of Santiago and
San Geronimo are the most famous and
only a quick 5 minute walk from the
pier. Even closer is the "Customs
House", built in 1630, the remains
of the church of La Merced, and the
church of San Felipe, the last building
to be built by the Spaniards. It was
inaugurated in 1814. One of the main
attractions is the carved statue of
Jesus that is in a black dark wood and
is called the "black Jesus".

Every 21st October of
every year there is a celebration and
reliving of Portobellos "black
Jesus" and the streets are lined
with processions of people holding candles
as the statue is carried from the church
by 80 men. Many pilgrims from all over
the world follow the statue through
the streets with Candles.
