Is Panama Dangerous for Tourists?

It does not matter where you travel in the world there will always be petty crime, however in Panama City the crime rates are unusually low and we must say it is probably due to the fact that on every corner lies 2 policeman. The Foreign and Commonwealth office rate Panama as a low risk country but just always be on your guard for pick pockets. Always avoid carrying your travel documents or large amounts of money in your purse or wallet. Also most theft occurs in the suburbs so make sure that if you have to travel through this area to keep your possessions safe, but on the whole you will have no problems.

Is the food safe to eat?

The food in Panama is healthy and nutritious as with most of Central America, however as people in the UK have different diets than people in Panama you may feel some upset stomachs at first, however this is normally rare. The great thing about Panama is that due to the variety is culture the variety in dining is immense, from Chinese to Mexican to French cuisine, there is something for everybody in Panama.

What are the hospitals like in Panama?

The emergency number in Panama is 301 for all emergency services. For medical emergencies in Panama City, contact Paitilla Hospital, where English is spoken and there is excellent medical service. If you do have any problems while at the hotel just ask the hotel and they will gladly assist. For anyone with health risks, hepatitis A & B shots are recommended along with any other shots your doctor advises, please visit your doctor before you go on holidays always. With regards to Malaria if you are traveling in remote, jungle areas such as the Darien (border with Colombia) then it is advisable, however all other parts of Panama are malaria free.\

The water in Panama City is fine to drink however outside this area we would suggest drinking bottled water. One problem a lot of travelers have is that the bacteria in the water are different than that at home so some people suffer from stomach pains when drinking water. We suggest drinking bottled water at all times just to be safe!!!

Are the beaches safe to swim in?

We would always suggest asking a guide or local about swimming in the area as every beach has different currents. On the Caribbean coast the waters are calm and good for swimming and snorkeling. However the Pacific Coast is a bit rough and be aware when swimming.

Is the sun intense?

The Equatorial sun is very strong between the hours of 12-2pm at its peak and we suggest a factor of 30 if you are every going out into the sun.
