San Blas

San Blas Archipelagos is a group of Islands on the Caribbean side of Panama est of Panama city that run along the Caribbean coast down towards Columbia. There are over 200 miles of Islands and the reefs that surround them are fabulous. The San Blas Islands are famous for the Kuna Indians who inhabit the Islands and live their own way of life on them. They have been here much before Columbus came and govern themselves in a autonomous way. If you are looking to see the native cultures of Panama then this is a must go area, however the accommodation is basic at it's most and if you do not like fish then you may have a problem as this is the local diet.

Bocas del Toro Dolphins
Normally the women and children will canoe their dugouts to the main Island where they wash and play while the men attend to their plantations of yucca and coconuts. The Kuna live a basic life and have no real demand for material goods however refrain from taking pictures until you have paid a normal $1 levy!! The Islands are run by the tribal heads who settle any disputes between their people, the local police force really does not bother the Kuna.

Usually the best way to visit the San Blas is a day tour rather than spend a night in very basic accommodation. You can gain access via 4x4 however a short plane ride is usually the easiest way to do it. Remember that the area is paradise however strict rules must be followed when visiting these areas such as women not to show their bikini's and for all to cover up.

Hotels that are recommended in the area can be found in the hotels section and a few are listed here: Dolphin Bay Lodge.
