Gamboa - Lake Gatun, Chagres River

The area of Gamboa is located 45 minutes east of Panama City. The road to Gamboa follows the Panama Canal half way up its journey to the Caribbean Sea. The area of Gamboa is famous for it's diverse wildlife and the immense variety of plants and trees within its rainforests. The area of Gamboa is vital to the Panama Canal itself at the Lake at Gatun where the gamboa stretches to is where the boats passing from one ocean to another have to pass through. Also there is a river called the Chagres which provides the Canal with it's fresh water. It is a common mistake to think that the Canal is full of Sea water due to its joining of 2 Oceans, however the central part of the Canal is fresh water.

Bocas del Toro Dolphins
The Gamboa is great for people wanting to fish for Rainbow Bass as the Canal and surrounding water pockets are great hiding places for these predators. If you are wanting to see some diverse wildlife a short boat ride up and down the canal with open your eyes. There are crocodiles resting of the banks of Islands, monkeys in the trees and sloth's hanging in their favourite trees.

The jewel in the crown of the Gamboa is the wonderful Eco-Resort of the Gamboa Rainforest Resort. The Hotel is located on lake Gatun and offers its guests great accommodations in the mist of the rainforest.
